Americans need a new energy plan that reduces our dependence on oil, protects our environment and helps consumers. But this week, the Congress will vote on an energy bill that represents more of the same: costly handouts to polluting industries, attacks on environmental laws and no meaningful provisions to reduce our dependence on oil. We can have energy security and a clean environment, but the energy bill conference bill delivers neither. It would do nothing to set us on a path toward energy independence. Even the Bush administration has admitted that energy legislation will do nothing to reduce the price at the pump. In addition, the bill would roll back the clock on environmental protection, granting the oil and gas industry special exemptions from clean water and safe drinking water laws. Finally, the bill would hand over billions in taxpayer dollars to America?s worst polluting industries while shortchanging renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Tell the Congress that we need a 21st Century energy plan that reduces our dependence on oil, invests in energy efficiency and renewable energy and protects the environment. Please send a letter to your Representative and Senator urging him or her to oppose the current energy bill. |
