How Many More Killer Storms Will it Take to Wake Up Washington?
Tell leaders at all levels of government to take immediate action to combat the threat of climate change. We need to reduce global warming pollution NOW.
>>
Warmer seas are producing more killer storms. Although no one can say for sure that global warming contributed to any of this season's many hurricanes, scientists are finding that warmer seas are producing much stronger storms. There also is a growing consensus among experts that the earth is getting warmer and that this warming is the result of the release of greenhouse gases from cars, power plants and other sources.
The U.S. needs to take immediate, strong action to put a stop to global warming. Write the president and your members of Congress and tell them stop the increase in greenhouse pollution and begin the switch to solar and wind power and more efficient cars and trucks.
Help wake up our leaders. Lives depend on it.

K.Emanuel, Nature (July 31, 2005)
Kerry Emanuel of M.I.T. found that total destructive capacity of hurricanes has increased markedly during the last 30 years. He calculated a power dissipation index based on storm duration and wind speeds. This index has almost doubled in the past 30 years.
P. Webster et al., Science 309:1844 (September 16, 2005)
Peter Webster and his colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology and National Center for Atmospheric Research reached a similar conclusion from their examination of hurricanes over the last 35 years in the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. Although they found no trend in the total number hurricanes, they observed a dramatic rise in category IV and V hurricanes in each of these oceans.
