Tell the FDA to stop ignoring the health and environmental dangers posed by nanotech

Unlabeled and with very little health and environmental safety testing, nanoparticles pose risks to our health and our environment.

Friends of the Earth recently released a consumer guide about the potential dangers of nanoparticles in sunscreens, but such particles are actually used in all sorts of cosmetics, including some sold by the biggest names in cosmetics like L'Oreal, Johnson & Johnson, and Revlon.

Please tell the Food and Drug Administration to take regulatory responsibility for this emerging technology's use in consumer products.

Stop Ignoring Health Threats of Nanoparticles

Dear FDA Commissioner:

I am writing to express my serious concerns about the FDA's regulatory oversight of nanomaterials in consumer products. Many consumer products containing engineered nanomaterials are already available on U.S. market shelves, including many cosmetics, sunscreens, and other personal care products.

Scientists have found that the fundamental properties of matter can change at the nano-scale, creating physical and chemical properties distinct from those of the same material in bulk form.

I am very concerned about the rapid introduction of these potentially hazardous nanomaterials into our bodies and into our environment without adequate scientific study to ensure that we understand their risks

I strongly request that FDA assess the human health and environmental risks presented by nanomaterials in consumer products.  The FDA should also act quickly to shore up its regulation of these substances.

Only with proper labeling can people make educated decisions about what to buy and put in and on their bodies and into the environment.
