Tell Target to Phase Out PVCs

Target stores may have the latest designs, but their aisles are filled with products made from a plastic that contains dangerous chemicals linked to cancer. Help get these plastics out of Target stores, and out of your home.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), also known as vinyl, is one of the most hazardous consumer products ever created and it is the second highest selling plastic in the world. It is dangerous throughout its entire lifecycle - from production to use to disposal. PVC is used in thousands of household products from plastic wrap, to shower curtains, shampoo bottles, some children's toys and thousands of other products we use every day.

We, the undersigned, call on Target to develop a plan and timeframe to phase out the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic in Target products and packaging, as other retailers and manufacturers have done. PVC plastic is used in shower curtains, packaging, children's toys, and other products sold at Target. The production of these products poses serious environmental health threats, requiring the use of dangerous carcinogens such as vinyl chloride. Communities surrounding PVC chemical facilities in the U.S. and around the world suffer from groundwater and air pollution. When produced or burned, PVC plastic releases dioxins, a group of extremely toxic chemicals, which can cause cancer and harm the immune and reproductive system. PVC is useless without the addition of a plethora of toxic additives, which are released during use and disposal, resulting in elevated human exposures to dangerous chemicals. The good news is that safe, cost-effective alternatives are available for PVC products and packaging sold by Target. Unfortunately Target is lagging behind other companies and competitors in phasing out PVC. We hope that Target will do the right thing and phase out PVC in favor of healthier alternatives and be a leader on this issue.

Recently, we discovered that many of the baby products (as well as products for adults) that we have purchased at our "favorite store" contain harmful chemicals like BPA and PVC. I've since started purchasing more products from Whole Food (sippy cups, bottles, etc) because I know they screen the products sold in their stores to ensure they are not harmful to our children. Target - step up! You will lose more and more market share if you do not heed the call of all the moms and dads who insist on safer products for their children. I'm surprised that a store I've touted for so long has fallen so short of the mark.
