In the 1980s and 1990s, Friends of the Earth campaigned against China’s Three Gorges Dam. Our efforts succeeded in stopping the World Bank and the Export Import Bank from providing funding for the project, but China built it anyway, displacing 1.2 million people and flooding 13 cities, 140 towns and 1,350 villages, under its 403 square mile reservoir.
In all those numbers, the personal stories of the disrupted lives are lost. These stories make a powerful case for protecting the environment and the people who rely on it.
In honor of the people displaced by the dam and to celebrate the International Day of Action for Rivers, local artists with connections to the project will express the personal struggles of people affected by the dam on this coming Monday.
Hosted by International Rivers and co-sponsored by Friends of the Earth and several other groups, the event will feature writer Li Miao Lovett, art critic Jeff Kelley, photographer Linda Butler and cellist Michelle Kwon and her quartet, who will all present artwork inspired by the damage caused by the dam.
Friends of the Earth invites you to attend this event to enjoy the art and support a good cause. For more information, please contact Karolo Aparicio at International Rivers by sending an email to karolo@internationalrivers.org or by calling (510) 848-1155 ext. 301.
Sincerely,
Michelle Chan
