Tell the EPA: Protect Our Families from Toxic Coal Ash

Coal Ash Disaster in TennesseeCoal ash is toxic, it's shockingly unregulated, and it's contaminating our communities. Polluters have so far blocked all attempts to set federal standards for the disposal of toxic coal ash, but now we're on the cusp of progress.

The EPA is currently considering the first-ever federal safeguards for coal ash disposal -- and is asking what members of the public think.

Your voice is critical to achieving the strongest possible protections for our health and environment.

Please join Friends of the Earth activists in urging the EPA to institute strong, federally enforceable coal ash safeguards.

Coal combustion waste, or coal ash, is a highly dangerous toxic material that should be regulated as a "special waste" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We need strong, federally enforceable safeguards that protect our communities from coal ash contamination.

For decades, coal-fired power plants have dumped their coal ash into unlined ponds and landfills, resulting in polluted drinking water supplies and spills into our rivers and streams. Communities across the country are routinely put at an elevated risk of cancer, organ damage and neurological developments due to coal ash contamination. Coal ash is unquestionably hazardous for human health and wildlife -- and polluters should no longer be allowed to get away with treating it as anything less.

I implore you to resist pressure from coal and utility lobbyists to maintain the toxic status quo -- and do the right thing for the millions of Americans living near coal ash sludge ponds and landfills. Set strong, federally enforceable safeguards for coal ash disposal.
