Sec. Kerry: Investigate the conflicts of interest in the Keystone review

Since it was published in March, the State Department’s environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline has come under intense criticism from environmentalists, the scientific community and the administration’s own EPA for failing to take into account the climate impacts of the pipeline.

Now we know why -- Friends of the Earth has revealed that the contractor hired to write this review, Environmental Resources Management, lied to the State Department when it declared that “no conflict of interest exists for working on this project”. What’s worse, no one at the State Department bothered to check whether this assertion was true.

It turns out that the company has been working with TransCanada and Exxon Mobil on another pipeline project and that they have deep ties to many of the oil companies that are licking their chops, hoping for a chance to more fully exploit the Canadian tar sands.

Send a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry demanding that he halt the Keystone XL review process until he gets to the bottom of this blatant conflict of interest.
