Statement Regarding Lieberman-Warner News Conference

WASHINGTON—Friends of the Earth Action President Brent Blackwelder issued the following statement today:

“Friends of the Earth Action’s opposition to the Lieberman-Warner bill is not just strategic, it is also substantive. This bill gives a trillion dollars to polluters, and it fails to meet the bar set by science and do what’s necessary to fight global warming. To many environmental organizations, leaders and activists, this is unacceptable.

“Additionally, Friends of the Earth Action strongly disagrees with the assertion that Senator John McCain supports a strong global warming bill. He does not yet support even this weak bill.

“We have great respect and appreciation for Senator Barbara Boxer’s long record of leadership on environmental issues. However, we are disappointed that, when offered the opportunity, Senator Boxer did not promise to oppose the addition of the explicit nuclear subsidies that have been called for by Senator McCain.”
