Lieberman-Warner Global Warming Bill Stalls in Senate

Weak bill lacked strong base of support; Senate must do better next year

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Friends of the Earth Action President Brent Blackwelder responded to today’s failed cloture vote on the Lieberman-Warner global warming bill with the following statement:

"There is an important lesson in the Lieberman-Warner bill's defeat. Instead of advancing a strong bill that could have united the environmental and progressive communities and motivated grassroots activists to organize support, the Senate's Democratic leadership decided to advance a weak measure.

"The climate crisis threatens our health, economy and way of life, and bold legislative action is urgently needed. Unfortunately, the Lieberman-Warner bill would not have done what scientists say we must to reduce global warming pollution. It would have been a bonanza for polluters, with half a trillion dollars of giveaways to the fossil fuel industry. This bill did not deserve to become law, but it is abhorrent that Republican senators, led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), would not allow debate on amendments that could have significantly strengthened the bill.

"The Senate has made substantial progress since anti-science Republicans lost control in 2006, but far more progress is needed. Fortunately, the coming elections hold the promise of a president and Senate less beholden to oil and coal industry lobbyists. The Democratic leadership in both the House and Senate must take advantage of such a situation with strong bills that inspire environmentalists and progressives across the country to take action and that can ultimately earn the support of all Americans."
