Senate Climate and Energy Bill Coming Soon
Senators Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) have announced they will introduce their much-anticipated energy and climate bill by the end of September. The Waxman-Markey climate legislation that passed the House of Representatives in June was weakened by polluting special interests. Friends of the Earth is working with allies to push Boxer, Kerry and other senators to introduce a stronger bill -- one that hastens our transition to clean energy and rapidly decreases the emissions of heat-trapping gases that cause global warming.
Verizon Wireless: Can You Hear Us Now?
This past weekend, Verizon Wireless co-sponsored a huge anti-environment, pro-coal rally in West Virginia, a state blighted with mountain-top-removal. The Labor Day event, organized by dirty coal company Massey Energy, featured right-wing celebrities Ted Nugent and Sean Hannity. Massey's CEO said, "...[E]nvironmental extremists and corporate America are both trying to destroy your jobs." Thanks to the more than 4000 of you who sent messages to Verizon Wireless. We hope to provide you all with an update on their response soon! For now, here is an article about the rally.
Ship Shape: Obama Ocean Policy Task Force Hearings
Our oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes are places of wonder and beauty and are also economic engines that provide valuable jobs, food, recreation, energy resources, and tourism. However, these essential resources are currently governed by more than 140 different, and often conflicting, laws which can lead to poor management and other problems. On June 12, President Obama created a 23-member Ocean Policy Task Force to develop a first-ever national ocean policy. The Task Force wants to hear from you! Read More.
Shedding New Light on Nanotechnology in Sunscreens
Our Health and Environment Campaigner Ian Illuminato, along with partners at the International Center for Technology Assessment and the Consumers Union, released another breakthrough report last month on the potential risks involved with using sunscreens made with nanoparticles. Nanomaterials' small size may make them more able to enter lungs, pass through cell membranes, and possibly penetrate damaged or sun-burnt skin. So the question becomes, if there are no advantages in sun protection, why should we accept the unnecessary potential risks to our health and environment? Our government must take action to protect consumers.
