A strong and fair global agreement to solve the climate crisis requires leadership from the United States, but the U.S. failed to provide such leadership over the past two weeks at talks held in Germany.
Please send the following message to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to urge the U.S. to do better.

It’s not too late to save the energy and climate change bill!
Polluter lobbyists damaged the bill before it passed the House, but it’s now headed to the Senate, where it can be fixed. Please send the following message to your senators today.
The Obama budget proposal released February 26, 2009 contains a super proposal to slash about $30 billion in taxpayer giveaways to the oil and gas industries. The days of Big Oil earning record profits while feeding at the taxpayer trough are coming to an end. President Obama's decision to put an end to these giveaways would be a huge victory for taxpayers and the planet if Congress approves.
The Obama budget proposal includes:
Send the letter below to urge Congress to approve this budget! The Senate has blocked similar efforts to trim giveaways to Big Oil in the past. They need to hear from you today!
The House climate bill now strips important forest protections and severely weakens a critical global warming protection in a federal biofuels mandate. Already, Senator Tom Harkin (D - Iowa) is threatening to move biofuels policy even further in the wrong direction as the climate bill moves to the Senate. He must be stopped.

Did you know that a single cruise ship carrying 3,000 people can generate several hundred thousand gallons of human sewage? Or that cruise ships can dump this sewage untreated just three nautical miles from shore? It’s true.
Cruise ships release vast quantities of pollution into our coastal and ocean waters. In addition to sewage, a single ship can release up to 1 million gallons of gray water (from sinks, baths, laundry and galleys), 25,000 gallons of oily bilge water, more than 10,000 gallons of sewage sludge, and more than 130 gallons of hazardous waste.
Polluted water can pose a risk to human health through the consumption of contaminated seafood or through contact with or swallowing contaminated water while swimming, surfing, or engaging in other water sports. These pollutants can also be harmful to the pristine environments vacationers seek to enjoy.
*Prohibit the discharge of sewage, graywater, and oily bilge water within 12 miles of shore and within marine protected areas.
*Establish more stringent standards for the discharge of sewage, graywater, and oily bilge water from 12-200 miles from shore.
*Prohibit the discharge of sewage sludge, ash and hazardous waste in U.S. waters.
*Establish full monitoring, reporting and inspection of pollution discharges.

The Clean Air Act -- the key existing federal tool to cut the pollution that causes global warming -- is under attack.
Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Jay Rockefeller, and others are attempting to stop the Obama administration from using the Clean Air Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Please join us in the fight to save the Clean Air Act by sending your senators a message today. Just enter your zip code below to get started.
Take Action: Save the Clean Air Act
As early as Wednesday Jan. 20, 2010 the Senate could vote on the "Murkowski amendment" to prohibit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from using the Clean Air Act to regulate carbon dioxide. This amendment is all about letting fossil fuel polluters keep up business as usual.
Our nation needs to solve the global warming crisis, protect our health, and kickstart our new green economy. The Clean Air Act is key to moving forward.
Please fill in your ZIP code to get started, make any edits you'd like and then send the following message to your senators today.

In Canada's tar sands, giant oil corporations are turning huge tracts of the pristine Boreal Forest, the Amazon of the North, into a wasteland of open pit mines, smoke stacks and toxic ponds. Indigenous communities that rely on the land and water downstream have seen high rates of rare cancers since the mining began.
You can help stop this race to ruin in its tracks. Big Oil wants to build a new pipeline, the Keystone XL, which would funnel more dirty tar sands oil into the United States.
The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary should be allowed to adopt the most protective measures available to preserve human health and the Sanctuary’s diverse marine resources. The Sanctuary provides a home and feeding grounds to marine creatures including manatees, dolphins, lobsters, reef fish, and corals.
Please take action below by February 17 to support the Sanctuary’s request to ban sewage dumping from ships in all Sanctuary waters.

The sports action at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver is great, but the actions of some of the sponsors of the Games are downright dirty. The Olympics are being fueled by corporations profiting from the tragedy unfolding in Alberta's tar sands.

The U.S. government has issued patents for almost one-fifth of the human genome, with dangerous consequences for you and me.
We are just beginning to understand the role DNA plays in determining susceptibility to certain diseases when combined with environmental factors. Gene patents aren't just wrong as a matter of principle. They also prevent researchers from better understanding these relationships and may be standing in the way of scientific and medical progress.
Fortunately, there's a bill in Congress that can end the patenting of human genes, but it needs a sponsor in the Senate. We have reason to believe Vermont's senators, Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, are among the most likely potential sponsors. Please send them the message below and ask them to sponsor the “Genomic Research and Accessibility Act.”

The Winter Olympics are being fueled by corporations profiting from the tragedy unfolding in Alberta's tar sands. That's where giant oil companies are turning huge tracts of the pristine Boreal Forest into a wasteland of open pit mines, smoke stacks and toxic ponds. And indigenous communities that rely on the land and water downstream are being poisoned in the process.
You can help us stop the destruction in its tracks. TransCanada, one of the dirty sponsors of the Games, is driving a new pipeline project, the Keystone XL, which would cut through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas and double our imports of dirty tar sands oil.
The Clean Air Act -- the most potent existing tool to cut climate-warming pollution -- is again under attack.
Last month Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced a resolution aimed at prohibiting the Clean Air Act from being used to fight global warming. Now Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) is sponsoring a similar bill that would prevent the EPA from enforcing the Clean Air Act for two years. We've seen this story before. Once "temporary" rollbacks are put in place, they often become permanent. Please take action today by asking your senators to oppose the Rockefeller Clean Air Act rollback.

Maryland should be allowed to adopt the most protective measures available to preserve human health and the diverse resources of the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay provides a home and feeding grounds to a diverse array of fish, shellfish, and waterfowl, including striped bass, crabs, and ducks.
Please take action below by March 16th to support legislation in the Maryland General Assembly that would ban sewage dumping from ships in the Chesapeake Bay.
Cruise ship pollution in Puget Sound and the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is threatening human health and the thousands of animal and plant species that rely on the Sound and the Sanctuary’s unique ecosystems. Puget Sound and the Sanctuary’s marine environments provide a home and feeding ground to aquatic life from eelgrass to orcas.
You can help protect human health and the Sound and the Sanctuary’s diverse marine resources from cruise ship air and water pollution by telling decision-makers at the State of Washington and the Port of Seattle to adopt the most protective measures available.
Please take action below by March 22nd to support a ban on dumping treated sewage at the dock, dumping sewage in the Sanctuary, and incineration while in Puget Sound waters.
