Nearly 30 million children eat school lunch every day. Yet new research from Friends of the Earth and the Chef Ann Foundation found that at least 28% of school lunch entrees contained processed meat. Highly processed breaded chicken products—including nuggets and patties—were the most frequently served entrée, appearing on menus on more than half of school days.

Our kids deserve healthier, high-quality food—not a system that makes highly processed meat and cheese the easiest options for schools to serve.

Our kids deserve healthier, high-quality food—not a system that makes highly processed meat and cheese the easiest options for schools to serve.

I urge USDA to make school meals healthier by:
 - Phasing out processed meats, supporting more diverse, fiber-rich protein sources,  and prioritizing whole and minimally processed foods in the upcoming Meal Pattern revisions;
 - Investing in school kitchens, staff, and training so schools can cook more meals from scratch;
 - Using its purchasing power to provide schools with healthier animal products raised without routine antibiotics and growth-promoting drugs, more organic options, and a greater variety of plant-based proteins;
 - Strengthening standards for USDA Foods so federal dollars don’t subsidize products containing ingredients of concern, such as nitrites, nitrates, and phosphates;
 
School nutrition professionals want to serve kids healthier food. Please give them the resources and choices they need to do it.
