Stop the Trump administration from gutting key protections under the Magna Carta of environmental law!

The National Environmental Policy Act has prevented the construction of dangerous projects with devastating and even deadly impacts on our environment and public health -- projects that might have proceeded despite local opposition, if not for NEPA. In short, it’s the “Magna Carta of environmental law.”

Now, Trump’s Council on Environmental Quality wants to weaken agencies’ considerations of the climate crisis when deciding whether to approve new fossil fuel projects under NEPA. We need your help to stop it!

Dear Chair Neumayr:

I urge you to reject the current proposal to scrub “climate change” from NEPA guidance.

As the White House Council on Environmental Quality noted in the 2016 final guidance, “[c]limate change is a fundamental environmental issue, and its effects fall squarely in NEPA’s purview.”  While the phrase “climate change” has noticeably been scrubbed from the proposed draft guidance, the reality that climate change is the fundamental environmental issue confronting both the United States and the global community is alarmingly clear. Extreme heat, severe droughts, and stronger hurricanes evidence the increasing threat greenhouse gases and climate change pose to public health, the stability of our infrastructure, and the safety of our communities.

By requiring environmental review and meaningful public input of proposed federal actions, NEPA is a critical tool requiring every federal agency to consider the impacts of climate change and the voices of frontline communities most vulnerable to the devastating effects of the climate crisis. The current proposal undermines that goal and must be rejected.
