Help protect our oceans: Tell the EPA to ban plastic pellet discharge!

Plastic pollution is hurting our economy, climate, and environment. The discharge of plastics is driving vulnerable species like sea turtles and blue whales closer to extinction. There are numerous reports of whales washing up dead with dozens of plastic bags in their stomachs.

If we’re going to reverse the damage done by our overuse of plastics, we need to address plastic pollution down to the tiny plastic pellets produced at petrochemical plants. With your help, we can stop plastic pollution at its source.

Dear Andrew Wheeler,

Plastic pollution is hurting our economy, climate, and environment. And communities near the petrochemical plants—many of which are low income and communities of color—suffer their harshest effects. The discharge of plastics is driving vulnerable species like sea turtles and blue whales closer to extinction. We must drastically change course if we are going to reverse the damage done by our overuse of plastics. I am asking the EPA to take the following actions:

• Set a strict zero limit for stormwater and wastewater discharge of plastic pellets and other plastic materials from petrochemical plants that make plastic from fossil fuels

• Create a no discharge limit of toxic pollutants from new petro-plastics facilities

• Revise the woefully outdated toxic pollutant limits for existing petro-plastics facilities
 
• And update the pollution control and monitoring requirements for these facilities.
