Tell Governor Newsom to stop giving our money to Big Oil!

The establishment of public banks can be a huge step to cut off the money for fossil fuel development projects -- while reducing Wall Street’s power over our financial future.

Right now, a bill in California that would open the door to establishing public banks is close to victory! It just needs Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature. But he will only sign it if he feels pressure from constituents like you.

Dear Governor Gavin Newsom,

I urge you to sign the California Banks Act, AB 857.  For too long Wall Street banks in which California cities’ deposits are held have financed environmentally and socially irresponsible projects world-wide. This includes tar sands, the Keystone XL Pipeline, Dakota Access Pipeline and other extreme fossil fuel schemes that damage the global climate and destroy local communities.

Californians are painfully aware of the intensifying wildfires destroying communities in our state in recent years—catastrophes made worse in part due to climate change. Climate scientists say fires, floods and droughts are intensifying worldwide because of climate change.  We do not want our public funds to be used to further fuel such destruction.

And, for too long, these large corporate banks have failed to provide the kinds of financial support that public banks can in our communities, whether it's renewable energy, affordable housing, housing the homeless, children’s education or low cost loans to job-creating entrepreneurs.

With your signature of AB 857, California will be at the forefront of the movement to establish public banks nation-wide.
