Protect endangered Polar Bears: Tell the BLM to block Big Oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge!

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would cause irreversible damage to this fragile and pristine ecosystem as well as the communities that inhabit it. And polar bears would be pushed closer to extinction. But instead of fully considering the destructive impacts of the proposed plan, the Trump Administration is barreling ahead.

The good news: The proposal isn’t finalized. With your help, we can flood the BLM with public comments opposing the agency’s plan to open the refuge for drilling and convince it to change course. But we must act fast.

The coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to diverse wildlife and supports local Indigenous communities. This unique habitat is on the forefront of impacts from climate change. Despite promising a robust, scientifically sound review process, the administration has repeatedly cut corners at every step of this process by placing arbitrary deadlines and limitations on the environmental review. Completing the leasing EIS within one year and limiting the pages does not allow sufficient time to gather and analyze scientific data, examine the negative impacts drilling would have on the landscape and wildlife, or hold meaningful discussions with the local communities and other stakeholders. The decision to sell this land is not well thought out. It should never happen.

This hurried process impact statement was disingenuous and incompatible with examining the true negative impacts drilling would have. Particular attention must be paid to protecting the needs of the Gwich’in people who, for thousands of years, have depended on the Porcupine Caribou that migrate through the Refuge to calve in the Coastal Plain.

More than 700,000 comments were submitted in opposition to development. Drilling the Coastal Plain would forever scar the landscape, impact iconic wildlife, and eviscerate the way of life for the Gwich’in. This is unacceptable.
