Tell the State Department to block the Keystone XL pipeline!

If the Keystone pipeline is approved it will lock us into decades of reliance on fossil fuels -- at a time when we only have 11 years to prevent a climate emergency.

It would exacerbate the climate crisis. And it would threaten a wide range of imperiled species, from American burying beetles to whooping cranes.

I'm writing in response to the "supplemental environmental impact statement" for Keystone XL and am very concerned that the project's harms haven't been fully analyzed. The proposed pipeline would pump more than 35 million gallons of tar sands crude oil across our country every single day, threatening waterways with spills and leaks. It would exacerbate the climate crisis. And it would threaten a wide range of imperiled species, from American burying beetles to whooping cranes.

As it stands your review is deeply inadequate. It uses flawed calculations and unsupportable statistics to downplay the risk from oil spills, as well as the extent and severity of potential climate impacts.

The document also fails to assess the harms to wildlife on several accounts:

1) It fails to fully acknowledge the potential for harm to protected species from oil spills in rivers along the pipeline's path. A spill could devastate species like endangered pallid sturgeon, as well as migratory birds like piping plovers.

2) It fails to fully acknowledge the potential for harm to protected species from collisions with power lines. This is the greatest known source of mortality for whooping cranes, and the project would place dozens of miles of power lines in their migratory corridor. Your review, however, concludes that no cranes will be harmed, even though power lines won't be buried near suitable crane habitat, as required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

3) It does acknowledge the potential for the project to cause some harm to wildlife, including federally protected species. But rather than truly analyze that harm, the document sweeps it under the rug and relies on insufficient and unsupported conservation measures.

For all these reasons, I urge you to do the right thing and reject Keystone XL once and for all. The project simply isn't in our national interest and would cause unacceptable harm to our environment.
