Demand Sanderson stop calling its factory farmed chicken “100% natural”!

Calling factory-farmed chicken “100% natural” is just another attempt to increase corporate control of our food system. If Sanderson gets away with spreading this misleading information, it will signal to other Big Ag giants that they can do the same.

Dear Sanderson Board of Directors,

Sanderson Farms claims that its chicken meat is “100% natural” with “no additives or artificial ingredients. Not ever.” However, Sanderson chickens are raised and slaughtered in inhumane, intensive farm conditions and are administered antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals on a routine basis. This is far from natural in any sense of the term.

I find the advertising of Sanderson’s chicken meat as “100% natural” to be extremely misleading and call on Sanderson Farms to either bring its business practices into compliance with its own claims or stop marketing its chicken meat as “100% natural.”

I expect chicken meat advertised as “100% Natural” not to be raised with routine antibiotics, not to contain any pharmaceutical residues, not to contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and not to have been confined indoors for the entirety of their lives. Sanderson clearly raises chickens in confined conditions, and has had the practicing of inhumane treatment such as the deprivation of natural light and enrichment and inhumane slaughter such as putting chickens into scalding tanks alive.

I demand Sanderson Farms immediately cease all practices that are inconsistent with its “100% Natural” marketing. These practices include, but are not limited to, using antibiotics routinely, selling chicken meat with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and confining chickens exclusively indoors in crowded conditions.

Alternatively, should Sanderson choose to continue business as usual, then all labeling, marketing, and advertising of its chicken meat as “100% natural,” “natural,” or using similar representations should cease.
