Stop the EPA from putting farmworkers and their families in danger!

The EPA just announced plans to roll back Worker Protection Standards that better protect farm workers from toxic pesticides.

Farmworkers and their families are already being exposed to Big Ag’s poisons every day. The EPA should not make a bad situation worse by taking away these important protections. We need you with us to convince the EPA to abandon its terrible plan.

Dear EPA Staff and Andrew Wheeler,

I am deeply concerned by EPA’s proposed changes to the Worker Protection Standards. Farmworkers and their families are regularly exposed to harmful levels of toxic pesticides, and the Worker Protection Standards offer some of the most basic and fundamental safeguards to protect farmworker communities.

The proposed rule would allow pesticide applicators to spray toxic pesticides, even in close proximity of unprotected farmworkers and bystanders, so long as they are technically not on the same property as the agricultural area where pesticides are being applied.

But pesticides drift. We know from the vast contamination of nearby plants, water, air and our food that pesticides often end up where they do not belong. The Worker Protection Standards are meant to mitigate this by creating a buffer zone, but the proposed rule would eliminate some of those protections.

Farmworkers are already being exposed to dangerous levels of pesticides, and many of those cases go unreported. Pretending that pesticides respect property lines is only going to make the problem worse. I urge the EPA not to weaken the Worker Protection Standards with the proposed rule.
