Tell the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis: Push for true climate solutions!

The House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis had a unique opportunity to set true progressive climate policy going forward. Instead, it caved to Big Oil and Big Ag on far too many of its recommendations.

We need you to demand the House Select Committee take steps to phase out fossil fuels and call for 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Dear House Select Committee:

I am calling on you to take a more detailed look at the climate crisis we are facing. Your current climate policy recommendations are a start, but you are missing important factors needed to fully address climate catastrophe.

The committee’s recognition that justice for frontline, Black, Indigenous, and communities of color must be at the heart of any climate solution is long overdue. Additionally, the report includes recommendations to expand a variety of existing programs that help farmers implement sustainable practices and conserve their land. Many of the recommendations in the report would help small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers build healthy soil and adapt to a warming climate. The recommendations on supporting organic farmers are very welcome, including providing support to help farmers transition to organic and increasing organic-to-institution procurement.

But this isn’t enough. If we are to meet the needs of frontline communities, we must embrace bold solutions that meet the scope of the challenge. Your plan must address the following issues:

•	We can’t avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis unless we transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030 and completely phase out fossil fuels.
•	If we are going to protect frontline communities and meet the challenge of the crisis, we must act now on fossil fuels. This requires a ban on all new fossil fuel leasing on public lands; a ban on fracking, and a ban on new fossil fuel infrastructure.
•	The benchmark of net-zero emissions by 2050 leaves room for continued use of fossil fuels.
•	CCS is a false climate solution. It should not be included in a comprehensive climate plan.
•	While many of the recommendations in the report would benefit small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers, other provisions would be counterproductive for helping America’s family farmers combat and adapt to the climate crisis. We must reject methane digesters and carbon markets, which put our health, climate, and communities at risk..
•	While many of the report’s recommendations are helpful, it does not go far enough in addressing corporate consolidation and the industrialization of our food system. 
•	Additionally, while the report does not go quite far enough, it does recommend providing some form of support for farmers to transition away from CAFOs.

A more aggressive approach to the climate crisis must be addressed. I implore you to listen to scientists and public health experts and take action!
