Tell Congress to support small farmers!

A growing number of people in the US -- over 41 million-- are facing food insecurity. Meanwhile, the pandemic has left many small, beginning, and underserved farmers in dire financial straits.

Thankfully, there is good news -- Senator Booker has introduced the Local FARM Act -- a way to support small family famers and famers of color to better serve their communities and stay in business. But we need you to help push your legislators to pass this bill.

As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor Senator Booker’s Local Food Assistance and Resilient Markets {FARM} Act, which would provide funding to support local food systems and small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers.

The Local FARM act provides funding for specialty crop purchasing, the Local Agricultural Marketing Program, online SNAP benefits and USDA microloans, all of which are desperately needed to keep America’s family farmers, particularly farmers of color, afloat.

Throughout this pandemic, Americans have faced record food insecurity and farmers have faced tremendous barriers to bringing their food to market and to needy families. The various programs in the Local FARM Act would provide the funding necessary to break down these barriers and allow small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers to access capital and bolster local food systems.

Additionally, every bucket of money included have carve outs for small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers. This is necessary due to USDA’s track record of discrimination and favoring large agribusiness. The only way to ensure local and regional food systems are resilient throughout this crisis are to provide resources for direct-to-market and food assistance programs from these producers.

The Local FARM Act would fill a gaping hole in our country’s assistance for farmers and needy families during this crisis, and I urge you to contact Senator Booker’s office and cosponsor the bill.
