Tell the Army Corps of Engineers to stop Pebble Mine!

Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers advanced the Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The agency released its rushed, flawed and inadequate Final Environmental Impact Statement.

The environmental damage would directly impact local Indigenous communities. Meanwhile, corporate polluters will rake in millions in profit.

I am dismayed to hear that the U.S. Army Corps finalized the Pebble Environmental Impact Statement amidst a global pandemic. The move was rushed, flawed and inadequate, and most importantly did not take into consideration the true impact on the environment. Alaskans, and others who care about our State, our environment, and most especially Bristol Bay and our wild salmon resources collectively understand the importance of halting this project.

It is reprehensible that the U.S. Army Corps have rushed an Environmental Impact Statement of this extremely controversial project despite the pandemic. They should not continue to push forward the Pebble Mine permitting process while interested stakeholders are preoccupied by our global health emergency. The agency’s decision to move forward despite opposition from Bristol Bay Tribes,  designated cooperating agencies that are requesting a proper review extension, as well as opposition from millions of Americans, is a poor choice. I and many others, understand the importance of protecting Bristol Bay’s communities, that are scrambling to protect themselves from coronavirus, and the environmental pollution the Pebble Mine would create.

Our future is in the balance and it’s up to leaders like you to protect both our lives and livelihoods by not approving the permit for Pebble Mine.  The world’s last great salmon fishery is in your hands.
