Demand President-Elect Biden take strong climate action.

The climate crisis is the existential fight of our time -- and the clock is ticking. President-Elect Joe Biden will serve at least 4 of the 10 years remaining when scientists tell us strong action is necessary to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis. After that, it may be too late.

President-Elect Joe Biden,

It is of profound importance that you successfully campaigned on a promise to tackle the climate emergency, and that you did so with environmental justice at the core. It is also of tremendous symbolic importance that you have pledged that the U.S. will rejoin the Paris Agreement on day one of your presidency. But as we enter 2021, with less than a decade left to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis, such symbolism is necessary but very far from sufficient.

When President Obama took over from President Bush, the world applauded the United States for just showing up on the international stage as believers in science. Today, the people who elected you – and the people of the world - are demanding far more than a “we’re back” statement. The U.S. will be judged by its actions, not by its words.

As the U.S. rejoins the Paris Agreement, your Administration must be clear in its intention to lead the world in a managed decline of fossil fuels, with the U.S. taking action in line with our country’s disproportionate responsibility for causing the climate crisis and its capacity to act. The U.S. must devise and implement measures based on science, justice, and equity to keep global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
