Tell the Tenessee Valley Authority: Stop utility shutoffs during the pandemic!

Access to water and electricity are fundamental human rights. And they’re even more important during a pandemic when people are spending more time at home.

Despite all this, communities are getting their utilities shut off -- with literal life and death consequences. Will you act to demand a moratorium on utility shutoffs?

To whom it may concern:

I write to urge TVA to institute a moratorium on utility shutoffs. Keeping people’s power and water flowing continues to be the only responsible option during a pandemic, and all people must have access to these basic services for the duration of the public health emergency.

Without water and electricity, people won’t be able to wash their hands, shelter in homes that are a safe temperature, support remote schooling for their kids, or refrigerate their medicines. It is a decision that literally has life-or-death consequences – not just for thousands of people who are behind on their bills, but for all residents as state healthcare systems struggle to contain the pandemic.

In addition, in the past months, unemployment has risen as a direct or indirect result of COVID-19. This is not a time when most past-due households have the ability to pay off their bills, while businesses are still closed and closing, and jobs are shrinking or disappearing.

Finally, the health and economic impacts of this pandemic are disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities, who are experiencing higher rates of both job loss and viral infection.

I urge you to adopt a shutoff moratorium for TVA’s entire service area, and keep it in place for the duration of the pandemic.
