Tell the U.S. government: Reject financing for oil and gas projects in Mexico!

The U.S. government -- through the Export-Import Bank -- is considering supporting the Hokchi block oil and gas production project in Mexico.

Last year alone, Ex-Im provided over $5 billion to oil, gas and coal projects in Mozambique, Argentina, and other countries around the world. We need your help to stop it from financing dirty projects and Big Polluters.

To Ex-Im chairman Kimberly Reed and Ex-Im Board of Directors:

We strongly urge Ex-Im to reject financing for the Hokchi oil and gas production project in Mexico. Supporting such a project will exacerbate climate change, likely pollute the local environment, and could present risks to worker safety.

Ex-Im should be reducing its carbon footprint instead of continuing to support projects like this. The Hokchi project has the potential to produce 400,000 tons of carbon pollution every year. This is the equivalent pollution of driving almost one million miles in a car. Ex-Im should follow the lead of the United Kingdom, who recently announced it was ending its support for overseas fossil fuel financing, including from UK Export Finance.

As a resident of the United States, I encourage Ex-Im to use my tax dollars to support projects that will not harm workers, the environment, and the climate. In 2020, Ex-Im has already provided over $5 billion for fossil fuel projects all over the world. It is time that Ex-Im stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry.
