Tell the U.S. government to terminate its involvement with a deadly coal plant in India!

In April, an ash pond burst at the Sasan coal plant and mine in the remote district of Singrauli, India. This caused a flood of toxic coal ash. Six people died. The U.S. government helped prop up the coal plant responsible for this disaster.

We need your help to stop the U.S. from continuing to finance this dirty project and polluting company.

I’m appalled at Ex-Im’s continued involvement with the dangerous and destructive Sasan coal plant and mine in India. I call on Ex-Im to immediately cut all funding and ties with the deadly project and its negligent operator, Reliance Power.

An ash dam at the Sasan coal plant burst in April, creating a massive flood of coal ash that led to the deaths of six people in the remote district of Singrauli, India. This is just the latest tragedy in a long string of documented abuses and disasters at the Ex-Im funded project.

Back in 2015, the Inspector General of an Ex-Im report revealing a stunning 19 fatalities at the facility. This followed a 2014 report from NGOs that revealed forced resettlements, occupied houses being bulldozed in the middle of the night, labor abuses including employees handling hazardous materials without protection, and rampant environmental contamination of the local community. Since the OIG 2015 report, monitoring reports have revealed that the death count continued to grow at Sasan even before this most recent incident.

As a resident of the United States, I’m appalled that our tax dollars were used to support the construction of this project and its continued operation. Despite repeated calls for reform, better safeguards, and environmental and labor protections, the operators of the Sasan power plant have repeatedly failed to live up to commitments. It’s time for Ex-Im to cut ties with this deadly project and Reliance Power.
