Tell Congress: End fossil fuel subsidies now!

Yesterday, President Biden rolled out plans to build a greener, more climate resilient country not burdened by pollution. Now it’s up to Congress to take the next step.

Can we count on you to tell Congress you support ending handouts to Big Oil, and investing instead in communities?

Dear Representative,

I urge you to support the End Oil and Gas Subsidies Act introduced by Representatives Blumenauer, Casten, McEachin, and Porter. The legislation would repeal some of the largest and most egregious tax code giveaways for the fossil fuel industry, generating much-needed revenue and reducing harm to both communities and the climate.

Pollution from fossil fuel emissions is responsible for 1 in 5 premature deaths globally. The industry kills more than 8 million people every year through heart disease, cancer, and more. And the burden of living in proximity to polluters is not shared evenly. Communities of color and low-income communities are exposed to some of the most dangerous air quality in the United States.

I implore you to address this racial inequality and stop premature deaths by ending fossil fuel subsidies and taking bold climate action.

The Biden Administration has already publicly indicated that cutting fossil fuel subsidies  should be considered to help finance coming infrastructure legislation. As attention shifts from relief to recovery, Congress should absolutely consider legislation like the End Oil and Gas Subsidies Act as sources of revenue. Repealing subsidies for polluters should go hand-in-hand with necessary investments in clean renewables.
