Demand the USDA protect our planet from climate chaos!

President Biden set the outline for the USDA to repair our food system while addressing the climate crisis. But the USDA is falling short. Its initial proposal would make the issues our country’s food system is facing even worse.

The agency is pushing forest-destroying biofuels, factory farm gas, and other ineffective proposals that directly harm communities and fail to deliver meaningful emission reductions.

If the USDA were to refocus, it could provide solutions that achieve climate goals, protect the health of people and pollinators, support sustainable farmers, and address racial justice in our food system.

Dear USDA,

Agriculture is a major driver of climate change but also has the potential to be a major climate solution. For USDA’s climate strategy to be successful, it must:

-	Seek input from and center producers of color and frontline communities impacted by industrial agriculture.
-	Refrain from supporting biofuels, factory farm biogas, and carbon markets, which all have disastrous consequences for environmental justice while failing to curb emissions.
-	Dramatically expand and improve successful conservation programs and climate research.
-	Initiate a just transition away from toxic, pesticide intensive industrial agriculture and factory farms to ecologically regenerative and diversified agriculture.
-	Leverage its power of procurement and oversight of nutrition and feeding programs to initiate a shift toward healthier, climate-friendly diets.

Without addressing these issues, USDA’s climate strategy will fail. And we cannot afford to fail on climate change.
