Demand Liberty Mutual stop insuring the Trans Mountain Pipeline!

The Trans Mountain Pipeline would ship more than 590,000 barrels per day of highly toxic tar sands oil through orca territory. It will increase oil tanker traffic, which disrupts the sonar that orcas rely on for food -- at a time when the pod is finally working toward recovery.

Pipelines like Trans Mountain needs insurance coverage -- without it they cannot be built, expanded, or operate. Liberty Mutual could be a leader in protecting endangered species like orcas, but instead they have refused to drop this Big Polluter.

As executives of major insurance companies, I’m sure you understand that enabling the construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline puts our climate, communities, and wildlife at severe risk.

That danger is what's fueling the growing campaign against your company, which was listed as an insurer of the pipeline project on the last insurance certificate. I understand that Trans Mountain is urging the Canadian Energy Regulator to keep your identity private on the next certificate due to the immense public backlash. This response has already pushed many other companies to adopt policies that restrict tar sands insurance, and therefore rule out coverage of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

I urge you to join these institutions by publicly indicating you will drop your policy on the Trans Mountain pipeline immediately. Furthermore, I ask that you adopt a policy ruling out insurance for all tar sands extraction and transport projects, and any future underwriting or investing in tar sands companies.

I can assure you that the campaign won't stop until you come out with a public statement confirming your commitment to these asks.

The stakes are incredibly high. The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion has not obtained the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of impacted Indigenous communities. By continuing to insure Trans Mountain, you are ignoring the rights of the Nations who have not consented to the pipeline.

Moreover, the tar sands, which are one of the most climate-intensive forms of oil in the world, cannot be allowed to continue to grow or we will lose the fight against climate change. Finally, if there is an oil spill from the tankers that will carry Trans Mountain’s tar sands crude oil it will mean the extinction of Southern Resident Killer Whales which would be an unacceptable tragedy.
