Take action to fight childhood hunger!

Right now, California lawmakers are considering crucial policies in the state budget to improve access to healthy food at school. One policy would provide free school meals for every student. Another policy would train school foodservice professionals so they are equipped to cook delicious, plant-focused meals for our students.

But Governor Newsom and the state legislature won’t act unless they hear from you.

Dear Legislators,

As a constituent, I’m reaching out to thank you for including Universal Free Meals in the budget and funding for school foodservice professional development training. I am also writing to request that you do all within your power to ensure that some of the foodservice training funding specifically supports plant-based school meals.

Whether for health, environmental, philosophical, cultural, religious or other reasons, California students and their families are increasingly asking for more plant-based options at school. But schools often face barriers in serving these options, including a lack of technical assistance and culinary training.

By ensuring that the state’s investment in foodservice professional development training helps facilitate plant-forward menus, the state can also make progress toward meeting its ambitious climate goals since plant-based foods have a lower carbon footprint. It’s important that some of the school foodservice training funding be allocated to help schools meet the growing demand from students and their families for plant-based options.
