Tell Tesla not to fuel electric vehicles with factory farm gas!

Tesla makes lofty claims of sustainability. But behind closed doors, Elon Musk’s company is undermining that goal. It wants to use energy converted from hog waste -- releasing methane, a gas over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This would prop up the factory farming industry, which abuses animals and is a leading contributor to climate chaos.

Dear Elon Musk,

I was very concerned to hear that electricity from factory farm gas may soon be used to charge electric vehicles under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. This dirty fuel is far from the clean and renewable electricity we need to build out EV charging infrastructure. Factory farm gas relies on the unsustainable CAFO system, polluting our soil and water. As this dirty industry is disproportionately sited in low income and BIPOC communities, the health burdens from exposure to factory farms’ toxic pollutants embeds environmental injustices.

Electric vehicles are meant to be a pathway to free our transportation sector from reliance on fossil fuels. But if the electricity used to charge EVs comes from dirty sources, we will not achieve the needed Just Transition. Tesla has repeatedly portrayed itself as an environmental leader. But a real environmental leader would not be pursuing Renewable Fuel Standard credits for electricity from factory farm gas.

I urge Tesla to publicly state that it will not pursue Renewable Fuel Standard credits from the electrification of biogas. We need to transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels. But a new future for electric vehicles cannot come at the expense of vulnerable communities who are already overburdened by pollution.
