Urge Kroger to help save the bees!

Bees are disappearing. If they continue to decline, some of our favorite foods could soon be in short supply. No watermelons for your summer picnics. No pumpkins for your holiday pies.

Kroger is the largest traditional grocery chain in the U.S. It could help save bees by phasing out the toxic pesticides used to grow the food it sells. But we need your help to convince it to act.

Dear Rodney McMullen,

I urge Kroger to help protect bees, butterflies and other pollinators by strengthening its pollinator health policy. Kroger’s current policy does not adequately address the use of pesticides that are driving pollinator declines.

Scientists across the world are warning that we are in the midst of an “insect apocalypse,” due in large part to the overuse of toxic pesticides. Bees and other pollinators — responsible for one in three bites of food we eat — are among the insects in great peril. The same pesticides that threaten pollinators pose risks to human health.

Kroger is falling behind its competitors on pollinator protection. Walmart’s pollinator health policy requires that 100% of global fresh produce and floral suppliers adopt ecological farming methods called integrated pest management (IPM), as verified by a vetted list of third-party certifiers, by 2025. And Giant Eagle has committed to end the use of pollinator-toxic nitroguanidine neonic pesticides in its produce supply chain.

I urge Kroger to further its commitment to pollinator protection by making a firm, time-bound commitment to phase out bee-toxic pesticides in its food and beverage supply chain, prioritizing neonicotinoids and chlorpyrifos, while supporting its suppliers to transition to safer alternatives, increasing offerings of organic products, and publicly reporting on progress.

As the largest traditional grocery chain in the U.S., it’s important that Kroger show leadership in making its food supply chain safer for farmers, farmworkers, consumers, and pollinators.
