Demand Congress support small farmers, not factory farms!

The factory farm industry harms our environment and subjects farm animals to intolerably cruel conditions. Yet the federal government hands these factory farms billions of dollars each year for “conservation.”

There is another way. Small-scale farmers and many farmers of color have found ways to feed their communities with sustainable farming that is better for our health and the environment. But Congress is still putting Big Ag first. We can stop subsidizing Big Ag and its polluting factory farms, but we need you to use your voice.

Dear Congressperson,

I urge you to support including $30 billion in funding for the climate-smart agricultural practices that are outlined in Senator Booker and Representative Spanberger’s Climate Stewardship Act, and I urge you to advocate for $10 billion in funding for debt relief for small-scale farmers in the upcoming budget reconciliation process.

Existing USDA Conservation programs can help make U.S. agriculture a leader in climate mitigation and adaptation, but only if they are tweaked and funded to incentivize the practices we know can help sequester carbon and provide a number of other environmental services. That is why additional funding for these programs should be tailored exclusively towards practices outlined in the Climate Stewardship Act, or else we risk these funds not reaching those who need them most.

Additionally, many small-scale farmers who were already under tremendous economic strain took on even more debt during the COVID-19 pandemic to help bolster local and regional food systems. Now, more than ever, we must support these producers with direct loan forgiveness both for the resiliency of these food systems and to help level the playing field for small-scale producers across the country.

I urge you to support these funding priorities in the upcoming budget reconciliation process.
