Demand the EPA ban bee-killing pesticides!

Neonics are the most widely used pesticide in the world. They’re long lasting and systemic -- staying in the environment for years. And they’re widely used in agriculture.

The EPA is responsible for determining the potential risks posed by chemicals -- including neonics. But just last week, whistleblowers for the EPA’s chemical division provided evidence that officials and managers in the EPA pressured employees to rule chemicals to be less toxic than they are.

Every day the EPA fails to ban this class of pesticides, our health, pollinator health, and endangered species suffer.

To the EPA:

I urge you to ban all neonicotinoids to protect endangered species, pollinators and other wildlife. The findings that the overwhelming majority of threatened and endangered species are likely to be “adversely affected” by neonicotinoids is unacceptable and, in addition to the prolific evidence that they harm people and pollinators, EPA should take immediate steps to ban them.

In addition to these findings, The U.N. estimates 40 percent of invertebrate pollinator species, including bees and butterflies, are on the brink of extinction. In recent years, beekeepers have lost an average of 40 percent of their hives with some beekeepers losing 100 percent of their operations. Over the last twenty years, monarch butterfly populations have declined by nearly 90 percent. Neonicotinoids and other pesticides are one of the leading causes.

Neonicotinoids pose a tremendous threat to these species and those named in the Draft Biological Evaluations of these three neonicotinoids. I urge you to ban neonicotinoids immediately.
