Tell Kroger to say no to butterfly-toxic pesticides!

Bees and other pollinators are responsible for 75% of our food crops. But bees are dying at unprecedented rates -- and toxic pesticides made by companies like Bayer-Monsanto are fueling these disastrous declines.

Kroger -- one of the largest grocery chains in the U.S. -- could play an important role in pollinator protection. The supermarket giant sells food grown with bee-toxic pesticides. If Kroger phased out toxic pesticides in its supply chain, it would be a huge win for the bees. But this will only happen if you tell this grocery corporation to do its part in saving bees and other pollinators.

I urge Kroger to help protect bees, butterflies and other pollinators by strengthening its pollinator health policy. Kroger’s current policy does not adequately address the use of pesticides that are driving pollinator declines. Independent testing found toxic pesticides — glyphosate, organophosphates and neonics — in Kroger’s store brand foods, and the company has not publicly communicated about taking any concrete steps to address it.

Scientists around the world are warning that we are in the midst of an “insect apocalypse,” due in large part to the overuse of toxic pesticides. Bees and other pollinators — responsible for one in three bites of food we eat — are among the insects in great peril. The same pesticides that threaten pollinators also harm human health.

I urge Kroger to further its commitment to pollinator protection by making a firm, time-bound commitment to phase out bee-toxic pesticides in its food and beverage supply chain, prioritizing neonicotinoids, organophosphates and glyphosate, while supporting its suppliers to transition to safer alternatives and increasing offerings of organic products, giving preference to food grown by domestic farmers.

As the largest traditional grocery chain in the U.S., it’s important that Kroger show leadership in making its food supply chain safer for farmers, farmworkers, consumers and pollinators.
