The National Environmental Policy Act is a bedrock environmental protection law that requires the federal government to request public input into polluting projects, seek less harmful alternatives, and minimize the impact on our communities and the environment.

Trump’s attacks on NEPA prioritized fossil fuel industry profits over the welfare of people, animals, and the planet. Now, it’s up to you to demand NEPA is restored and strengthened to help protect our planet from irreversible damage.

To the Council on Environmental Quality:

I am writing to thank you for taking the first steps toward undoing the Trump administration’s rollback of the National Environmental Policy Act. I was pleased to see the Phase 1 proposal and urge you to take all further actions necessary to strengthen the act and adequately protect people and our planet from climate change and environmental injustice.

NEPA ensures that the public has a voice in decisions about what happens in their communities, and the Trump administration’s rollback was nothing more than an attempt to sideline the public, particularly communities of color, at a time when our voices matter most. This goes against the very foundation of our Democracy.

The CEQ has taken important, laudable steps to strengthen NEPA since Trump gutted it, but more must be done to continue to restore and improve NEPA -- especially by taking a more comprehensive and affirmative approach to integrating environmental justice and climate into the implementing regulations.

We need you to bolster NEPA's protections now more than ever. Scientists have declared climate change “a code red for humanity,” and President Biden has placed a high priority on correcting deep-rooted environmental injustice across the nation. Our bedrock environmental protection law is key to safeguarding against the climate crisis and environmental racism. We need you to immediately restore and strengthen the act with these issues in mind.
