Demand the DOE get out of the way of clean energy!

The DOE’s Big Oil giveaway is about to ramp up through a massive buildout of infrastructure for fossil fuels like fossil-based hydrogen hubs and carbon pipelines. These fossil fuel projects pollute our communities, threaten wildlife, drive climate change, and contaminate our water.

Renewable energy is ready to take over – but subsidies are artificially propping up the fossil fuel industry and keeping us from a just transition to clean, renewable energy. Will you use your voice to demand the DOE stop funding fossil fuel scams?

Dear Secretary Granholm:

I am writing to ask the Department of Energy to stop funding dirty energy.

The Department of Energy, through the newly created Office of Clean Energy Demonstration, is poised to provide billions in public funding for carbon capture, blue hydrogen, and nuclear energy. These dirty energy subsidies do nothing to move us towards a sustainable energy future and will perpetuate a legacy of pollution and the acts of environmental injustices brought about by the fossil fuel and nuclear industries on Indigenous, Black, Brown, AAPI, and working-class communities. The DOE should not be allowing ‘clean’ funding to be co-opted by climate scams and must also dramatically improve its responsiveness to the concerns that the public is raising about this waste of taxpayer funding.

We are very concerned by the continual pattern of DOE creating unnecessary hurdles to public input about its new programs, including the January 25th Secretary of Energy Advisory Board’s meeting about implementing billions in new funding for fossil fuel scams. This meeting failed to address the harms these projects will have on frontline communities and did not adequately allot time nor conduct outreach to hear directly from the people these projects will affect. It is hard to imagine the SEAB will be able to meet their responsibility as advisors without having meaningful input from the public.

Public funds should not be co-opted for climate scams that do nothing to address the climate crisis and that have been directly named as ‘not beneficial to communities’ by the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council. Before allocating the billions of IIJA funding, the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations must take a comprehensive look at the impacts of the technologies it funds, and ensure no funding goes to projects that will perpetuate the fossil fuel industry or its ongoing legacy of environmental injustice. This office must instead live up to its name by prioritizing funding clean, renewable energy.
