The Department of Interior continues to give the greenlight to dangerous fossil fuel projects in the Gulf and beyond. Oil drilling releases toxic fumes and chemicals that can kill and harm wildlife like sea turtles and people in and around the shore.

Dear Secretary of the Interior Haaland,

I was very happy to learn that the proposed Lease Sale 257 in the Gulf of Mexico was vacated by judicial order due to the agency’s improper environmental review.

In light of this flawed analysis, I’m writing to ask that you please stop permitting new exploration plans, development plans, and drilling permits on existing leases in the Gulf of Mexico unless and until the Department of Interior properly analyzes the climate impacts of oil and gas drilling pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act.

The Gulf of Mexico has historically been treated as the nation’s sacrifice zone for Big Oil. Offshore pipeline leak rates in the Gulf are 10.28 times the national rate. The primarily Black, Indigenous, and communities of color who live in this region have suffered the worst impacts of fossil fuel pollution for far too long. Your administration’s commitment to environmental justice also begs for proper analysis of the impacts from more oil and gas development in the Gulf.

Please do the right thing and prioritize Gulf communities and the environment over fossil fuel industry profits.
