Demand Big Industry stop driving illegal deforestation and protect our planet!

When rainforests are cut down, elephants and jaguars die with them. And the communities who live nearby are forced out of their homes. Corporations like Procter & Gamble could help stop rainforest destruction.

The Forest Act proposes to ban companies from importing ingredients linked to illegal forest destruction. But these same corporations could doom the Forest Act if they’re not stopped. We need your help to convince them to help stop illegal deforestation.

I am writing to urge you to support the federal Forest Act.

The FOREST Act aims to disincentive illegal deforestation by restricting certain commodities and derivative products originating from illegally deforested lands from accessing the U.S. market.

Tropical forests cover roughly seven percent of the Earth’s surface, but harbor close to 50 percent of all species on Earth; an estimated 18 million acres of forest, an area 1/5 the size of California, is lost every year due to industrial activities. Tropical deforestation is the third leading driver of global CO2 emissions.

The agro-commodities your company uses are generally sourced from regions with poor governance, high levels of corruption, and epidemics of illegality and human rights abuses. Your company has committed to halting deforestation in your supply chains. You have committed to making your supply chains fully traceable and transparent. You have committed to a Net Zero emissions pathway. And yet, it is widely known that most companies that have made such commitments have not yet achieved implementation. It is readily apparent that your company’s sustainability policies will be strengthened and supported by the level playing field that the FOREST Act aims to create. By preventing imports of illegally sourced materials for all companies in the U.S. market, the FOREST Act will enable the entire market to rise above its current exposure to illegally sourced forest-risk commodities.

It is also widely known that many U.S. companies put tremendous amounts of money and political capital into blocking any form of regulation that may affect them. I understand that, up to now, your company has done little to support the FOREST Act and may, in fact, be actively working to prevent its passage.

The planet and its people are in greater peril than ever before. As a consumer seeking to create a livable future, I urge you to PUBLICLY endorse the FOREST Act as a key step towards fighting illegal logging and ending global deforestation.
