Dear Secretary of the Interior Haaland,

On the 33rd anniversary of the Exxon-Valdez oil spill, I am writing to ask you to stop all new oil and gas drilling in Cook Inlet, including canceling Lease Sale 258 and permanently withdrawing Cook Inlet from future 5-year oil and gas lease plans in Alaska.

The rich and productive waters of Lower Cook Inlet are considered some of the most biologically productive marine waters in the world. They are a critical component of the Gulf of Alaska's ecological integrity and biological productivity. These waters support more than $1 billion a year in economic value derived from local tourism businesses and commercial, sport, personal use, and subsistence fisheries.

Oil & gas exploration and development in Lower Cook Inlet will pollute the area's lands and waters and industrialize a world-renowned ecologically intact and undeveloped wilderness landscape threatening the tourism and fisheries economies that depend on these values. And this decision comes at a time when climate change and ocean acidification already pose grave threats to Alaska's fisheries and the economies and coastal communities they support.

Hilcorp, the corporation exploring oil and gas development in Cook Inlet, was fined $180,000 just last year for methane leaks and failure to comply with regulations. The company has shown it will put profits before the health and wellbeing of people and the environment. If the DOI approves oil and gas drilling in Cook Inlet, it guarantees another oil spill.

After over 33 years, Prince William Sound, Alaska, is still struggling to recover from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. I’m asking you to protect Cooke Inlet from possibly suffering the same fate by stopping oil and gas drilling in the area, including canceling Lease Sale 258, and permanently withdrawing Cook Inlet from future 5-year oil and gas lease plans in Alaska.
