The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved over 130 fracking projects in the past 5 years. And it plans to green-light more of them without analyzing their effects on communities or the climate.

Instead of rubber-stamping the proposals of greedy fossil fuel corporations, the agency must protect people and the planet from greenhouse gas pollution. Pipeline leaks risk contaminating water supplies, polluting communities of color, and devastating vulnerable wildlife.

To the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission:

On behalf of myself, my community, and the climate that we share, I write to support these two dockets as part of a long-overdue overhaul your permitting process. And encourage you to expand both dockets both in scope and in direct standards of review for projects under FERC's purview. For too long FERC has approved gas pipelines, LNG terminals, and hydropower dams for big developers with zero regard for the safety of communities, wildlife, and the planet. 
 
While these dockets are both important steps in the right direction, they are also insufficient to address all the harm to our climate and communities. FERC’s decisions directly impact the lives of people throughout the country and for too long - as activists, state legislatures, local regulators and the courts have told FERC - real considerations of climate impact, GHG emissions, and environmental justice have been not just ignored, but specifically banned from FERC's decision-making process.

Now we finally have a draft docket that begins to address these concerns, and instead of immediately implementing the changes and working with impacted communities to expand and refine their impact, FERC has bowed to political pressure and threatened to delay, defer or deny the whole enterprise. Instead of rolling back protections, such as greenhouse gas analysis and impacts on communities, I implore you to truly overhaul your permitting process to ensure that people come before polluters.
