Tell your legislator to oppose keeping California’s last nuclear plant alive!

ACTION NEEDED: California is one earthquake away from exposing hundreds of thousands of people to NUCLEAR RADIATION. The Diablo Canyon nuclear plant sits near 3 fault lines that could generate quakes stronger than the reactor is built to withstand. But a new bill in the California legislature would extend its life.

Radiation victims could climb into the MILLIONS if southerly winds prevail and send the radioactive plume south, from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. Californians cannot afford this risk.

But we can block this bill to overturn that progress if environmentalists like YOU speak up.

Dear Legislator,

The Diablo Canyon Power Plant must be retired as planned by 2025. I urge you to oppose any bill that aims to extend its operating license.

Extending the operation of Diablo would violate the closure agreement established in 2016 and codified by the California legislature and the CPUC in 2018. That agreement is a model for the rest of the country to emulate – demonstrating how phasing out nuclear power plants can help accelerate reductions of emissions, the renewable energy economy, and a just and equitable transition for workers and communities. As Californians, we want to promote this agreement, not preempt it.

The Diablo Canyon reactors present tremendous and unnecessary risks to public health and the environment. Diablo sits near multiple active earthquake faults, posing an unacceptably high seismic disaster risk. From uranium mining to radioactive waste, nuclear energy is dangerous and destructive and has disproportionately impacted BIPOC communities. Nuclear power is also extraordinarily expensive and abandoning the Diablo Canyon agreement could add billions to its price tag.

The Diablo Canyon Power Plant is a dangerous, destructive, and expensive hangover from an outdated energy production process. It must be retired as planned by 2025.
