The Department of Interior is finalizing a plan to lock us into continued drilling in the Gulf for YEARS -- threatening the people and wildlife who live there.

Fossil fuel leases trigger dire circumstances for people too: air and water pollution, spiking cancer rates, and devastating economic loss. The same oil spill that would decimate sea turtles would litter beaches with dead fish -- fish that provide millions of people with economic opportunity. And local communities would suffer from the fumes that cause irritation and respiratory illnesses.

And the Gulf Coast’s historically Black and Brown communities who have lived in the shadow of fossil fuels for generations will be hit hardest.

But it's not too late! Your swift action can stop it.

Dear Biden Administration & Secretary of the Interior Haaland,

I’m writing to ask that you revise the proposed Five-Year Proposal to issue a final plan with no new oil and gas leases in all areas of the Outer Continental Shelf. We maintain this unified demand despite Congress’s recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains distressing provisions for offshore drilling. These provisions do not reflect public sentiment or the will of the people, who predominantly oppose continued offshore drilling.

Oil and gas leasing in the face of climate change is threatening vulnerable species like sea turtles and polar bears, harming fragile marine ecosystems, and exacerbating disproportionate harm to coastal communities. Please keep your promise of no new leasing and issue a Five-Year Plan that stops prolonging this harmful industry in our oceans.

Please do all you can to protect our federal ocean waters from dirty and dangerous offshore drilling. After the Exxon-Valdez, Taylor Oil, and Deepwater Horizon disasters, it’s clear that offshore drilling will inevitably result in another catastrophe. The Trump Administration prepared its draft Five-Year Plan to hand over nearly all of our oceans to the offshore drilling industry. I am calling on you to reverse course and issue a Five-Year Plan that emphasizes sustainability and stewardship of our natural resources for future generations through no new oil and gas leases.
