Help prioritize Gulf communities and wildlife over Big Oil profits by 11:59pm TONIGHT!

Big Oil has a long history of extracting the Gulf’s resources while making empty promises that the region will see wealth and opportunity in exchange. Instead, Big Oil has treated the Gulf as a sacrificial zone, bringing poisoned air, water, and the looming threat of oil spills.

Offshore pipeline leak rates are 10x HIGHER in the Gulf than the national rate. And oil spill fumes can cause respiratory problems and pneumonia for people living nearby.

Gulf communities and wildlife need less Big Oil pollution, not more. But if the DOI doesn’t hear from enough people, the health of Gulf communities, marine habitats, and endangered sea turtles are at risk.

Dear Biden Administration & Secretary of the Interior Haaland,

I’m writing to ask that you revise the proposed Five-Year Proposal to issue a final plan with no new oil and gas leases in all areas of the Outer Continental Shelf. We maintain this unified demand despite Congress’s recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains distressing provisions for offshore drilling. These provisions do not reflect public sentiment or the will of the people, who predominantly oppose continued offshore drilling.

Oil and gas leasing in the face of climate change is threatening vulnerable species like sea turtles and polar bears and harming fragile marine ecosystems. More critically, offshore drilling hurts frontline and coastal communities who already bear the brunt of climate change burdens, with the continued inevitability of spills, harms to public health, and disastrous effects on the tourism and fishing industries on which so many of these communities rely. The refineries that must accompany offshore drilling release particulate pollution that exacerbates asthma and has been linked to lung cancer, and refinery malfunctions lead to acute air pollution episodes. Ensuring there is no new drilling in the Five-Year Plan is a matter of environmental justice. Please keep your promise of no new leasing and issue a Five-Year Plan that stops prolonging this harmful industry in our oceans.

Please do all you can to protect our federal ocean waters from dirty and dangerous offshore drilling. After the Exxon-Valdez, Taylor Oil, and Deepwater Horizon disasters, it’s clear that offshore drilling will inevitably result in another catastrophe. The Trump Administration prepared its draft Five-Year Plan to hand over nearly all our oceans to the offshore drilling industry. I am calling on you to reverse course and issue a Five-Year Plan that emphasizes sustainability and stewardship of our natural resources for future generations through no new oil and gas leases.
