MONARCHS OFFICIALLY ENDANGERED | ACT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

Migratory monarch butterflies are declining at an alarming rate and were just added to the “red” list of threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Scientists estimate that, in the United States alone, populations of this beloved species have dropped up to 95% since the 1990s.

Adult monarchs are being scorched by climate change, and chemical herbicides are decimating helpless caterpillars’ only food source. We need urgent action to protect this species before it is gone for good. That’s why we’re calling on 379 more people to sign our new petition.

To the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

I am writing to urge you to implement immediate endangered species protections for monarch butterflies and caterpillars. This iconic species and their yearly migration have inspired a sense of wonder for generations of people. But now, we’re one step closer to losing monarchs forever.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has officially moved monarch butterflies to its “red list” of endangered species. Not only has their population dramatically declined in recent decades, escalating human-driven factors have significantly increased threats to their survival.

These threats include extreme heat and drought related to the climate crises, the loss of critical habitats due to human development and the decimation of monarch caterpillars’ only food supply – milkweed – by massive herbicide use in the agricultural sector.

The future of monarch butterflies is in peril. But right now, no federal protections exist for this species within the United States. Please, bring our federal listings in line with the leading international organizations and enact critical protections for monarch butterflies now.
