Demand your Congressmembers fight P&G’s support for illegal deforestation by 11:59pm TONIGHT!

P&G’s suppliers destroy rainforests and violently steal land from Indigenous communities. Local people have stewarded these forest ecosystems for generations, but greedy corporations are turning that land into a sea of stumps and dirt. With each passing minute, more rainforest is lost.

There’s a bill in Congress that would stop P&G from using illegally harvested forest products. The Forest Act can help save forests from destruction -- but only if you help it pass.

Dear Legislator,

Tropical forests cover roughly seven percent of the Earth’s surface but harbor close to 50 percent of all species on Earth. Tropical deforestation is the third leading driver of global CO2 emissions. And nearly half of all tropical deforestation is likely a result of the illegal conversion of forests for commercial agriculture.

Just four commodities -- cattle, soy, palm oil, and wood products -- drive most of the deforestation. Agricultural commodities produced on illegally deforested land enter international markets and unfairly compete with products produced legally. Illegal deforestation is also often associated with corruption, organized crime, and human rights abuses, including violence against indigenous peoples and other environmental defenders.

The FOREST Act of 2021 aims to prohibit access to U.S. markets for commodities that originate from illegally deforested land. If passed into law, this will reduce the long-term incentive to sacrifice productive forests for agriculture uses -- and help keep those forests standing for wildlife, traditional livelihoods and cultural practices, recreation, and the climate. The bill will also use this market leverage to bring together different interests to improve laws and better monitor and enforce existing laws in countries experiencing illegal deforestation.

Companies and governments are increasingly committing to end deforestation within their supply chains and borders. Yet, the clearing of forests is accelerating, often in violation of a producer country’s laws, and companies are consistently falling short of their goals. Elimination of commodity-driven deforestation is good for the environment and good for business. This bill creates the roadmap for how countries can use trade access to directly address deforestation internationally.

The bill is supported by a broad range of interests, from business associations and investors to virtually every environmental group in the country.

I, therefore, respectfully urge you to do whatever is in your power to support the passage of the FOREST Act into law.
