In 2015, the FDA UNLAWFULLY APPROVED genetically engineered salmon for human consumption without a full review of the environmental risks. But the greedy company responsible is moving forward with producing these risky GMO animals anyway!

Experts are concerned about the DRUGS USED in producing these salmon, the risk that it COULD TRIGGER NEW ALLERGIES in people and the THREATS TO WILD SALMON. Courts ordered the FDA to redo its environmental assessment, but it’s STILL incomplete! We need FULL disclosure.

While the FDA’s new environmental assessment of the GE salmon is an improvement on its original assessment, the FDA’s environmental assessment of GE salmon at the Prince Edward Island facility fails to fully assess the impacts of GE salmon on surrounding watersheds and on endangered species. The assessment fails to discuss potential impacts on the increasing population of Atlantic Salmon around PEI, fish mortality statistics for GE salmon, and information on antibiotics and antivirals being used in their production.

I support thorough and transparent safety assessments that prioritize public health and the environment and urge the FDA to complete its assessment. This assessment should include potential impacts on PEI and Maine’s wild salmon populations, complete disclosure of antibiotics and any other drugs used in the production of GE salmon, and complete disclosure of all diseases present in the GE salmon produced.

GE salmon could impact the survival of wild salmon. When GE salmon escape or are accidentally released into bodies of water, the new species could threaten native fish populations, such as wild salmon populations, by mating with endangered salmon species, outcompeting them for scarce resources and habitat, and introducing diseases, such as Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus (ISAV).

In addition, the GE salmon facilities on PEI may contribute to existing impacts from industrial aquaculture, such as the release of untreated wastes and nutrients and increased risk of disease and parasite transmission (such as sea lice) from farmed fish to wild fish. There are also concerns about the use and release into the environment of drugs and chemicals, such as antibiotics, pesticides, fungicides, and hormones, and the overfishing of vast quantities of smaller forage fish to feed carnivorous farmed fish, such as salmon. The AquAdvantage salmon may be susceptible to more diseases than fish currently grown in aquaculture facilities. Consequently, the amount of antibiotics given to transgenic fish may be higher than the amount currently given to farmed fish. FDA should conduct a more thorough evaluation of these and other potential risks posed by the GE salmon facilities.

FDA must thoroughly consider the potential risks and conduct additional environmental impact assessments before allowing further commercialization of AquAdvantage Salmon.
