Help protect Avi Kwa Ame from greedy developers who scar land for profit!

Avi Kwa Ame, or Spirit Mountain, is a culturally and biologically rich region of the Mojave Desert. It’s important to local Indigenous communities and critical habitat for the desert tortoise. The world’s largest and oldest Joshua trees are here as well -- some over 900 years old.

But greedy developers are threatening to tear apart the landscape for profit! President Biden must take immediate action to PROTECT Avi Kwa Ame -- every day we wait is more opportunity for developers to DESTROY Avi Kwa Ame and its surrounding lands.

Thank you for committing to declaring Avi Kwa Ame (Spirit Mountain) a National Monument at last fall’s Tribal Nations Summit. It’s crucial you deliver on your promises as soon as possible while honoring the local Tribes’ proposed monument boundary that would protect the area from industrial development.

The proposed Avi Kwa Ame (Spirit Mountain) National Monument spans nearly 450,000 acres of public land in southern Nevada with outstanding ecological, cultural, recreational, and scenic values. Designating these lands as a national monument would ensure their preservation for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. I support the establishment of Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.

The proposed monument contains some of the most visually stunning, biologically diverse and culturally significant lands in the Mojave Desert and features dramatic peaks, scenic canyons, natural springs, ancient Joshua tree forests, and a rich history of rock art and other cultural sites. The proposed monument is a hotspot of botanical diversity, providing habitat for a cacophony of plants and animals, including many species found nowhere else on Earth.

The Tribes who consider this region to be sacred and ties to their ancestral history, which include the Mojave, Hualapai, Yavapai, Havasupai, Quechan, Maricopa, Pai Pai, Halchidhoma, Cocopah and Kumeyaay people, have been eagerly anticipating news from the White House on the timing of when this designation will take place.

Please make an official declaration and designate Avi Kwa Ame National Monument as soon as possible. It will conserve important cultural sites, protect wildlife habitat, benefit the local economy, and preserve these lands for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
