Beavers are ecosystem engineers that create rich wetlands offering us an important nature-based remedy for carbon drawdown. In addition to climate benefits, beaver dams and meadows provide vital ecosystem services such as water storage and filtration, natural firebreaks, and fish and wildlife habitat.
Beaver dams slow down the flow of water, so the water stays on land for longer -- making it available to both animals and people. Wetlands and ponds maintained by beavers even improve water quality itself.
But state fish and game agencies have failed to sufficiently protect beavers across the country. Beavers are being VICIOUSLY KILLED in staggering numbers. Tens of thousands of these beloved mammals are trapped, snared, and shot every year.
Banning beaver hunting and trapping is the one single factor that we can control to help their populations grow and recover. The urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises calls for bold action at the executive level of government — and we need 5,942 more signatures from environmentalists to help save these climate-solving animals before it’s too late.
