Many of us couldn’t even walk outside without breathing in wildfire smoke air for several days this summer. Rising sea levels encroach on homes and businesses. Droughts leave people without water.

The climate crisis isn’t slowing down – not unless we fight the fossil fuel corporations that are accelerating it. That starts with the U.S. not supporting dirty projects that only accelerate warming.

But in Papa New Guinea, a new liquefied natural gas project could be approved and supported by the U.S. in violation of its own commitments. The project would threaten local communities and our entire planet.

We need you to help stop it!

Dear Chair Reta Jo Lewis,

Please do not finance the Papua Liquefied Natural Gas Project. This project is both a disaster for the local communities and the climate! The U.S. government should not be using taxpayer dollars to subsidize fossil fuel companies.

Papua New Guinea has a great deal of poverty. This project will not help these people, but will likely make their lives worse. Investments in renewables would do much more to help these communities achieve access to electricity and improve their livelihoods.

Moreover, President Biden made a commitment to end overseas fossil fuel finance. As a member of his administration, I urge you to not break this commitment by supporting this project. This project will help increase the world’s dependence on fossil fuels and make limiting global warming to 1.5°C even more difficult.

The project would be located in an area whose coastal areas are already hard hit by climate change. Rising sea levels and storms on the ocean have forced some communities to relocate their homes multiple times. An earlier project led by ExxonMobil (PNG LNG, which EXIM previously supported) has previously been associated with human rights abuses, escalating tensions, land-related issues and broken economic promises. Don’t make the same mistake twice by supporting Papua LNG!

In addition, this project presents considerable financial risks. First, it has not secured any guaranteed sales. Second, global gas demand is expected to decline by 55% by 2050, which could make this a stranded asset and put EXIM’s investment at risk.

For these reasons I stand with the people of Papua New Guinea who have repeatedly called for the end of all fossil fuels in order to safeguard a habitable climate for the region and prevent further harm to Pacific island communities. Do not finance Papua LNG! I appreciate you taking my views into account.
